With the end of the summer posting season upon us, I thought it timely to provide you with a reminder of the key social events our Association will hold this fall and to share with you my thoughts on developing a Gunner Regimental esprit-de-corps in the NCR.
The Ottawa Gunners Association was created in the 1950s to unite all NCR Gunners to foster an esprit-de-corps and maintain the comradeship bonds developed through service in the Regiments while promoting and maintaining the heritage, traditions, and culture of The Royal Regiment of Canadian Artillery. In effect, the organization is the only focal point for Gunner activities in the NCR with a special emphasis placed on remaining connected.
The Association has undergone many changes over the last two years to become more relevant and adapted to the realities and demands of our busy professional and personal lives. We now have a rejuvenated Executive Committee staffed with serving Gunners (officers and NCMs) looking out for our common interests. We have cancelled our membership fees, developed an annual social fireplan (see attached), pressed forward with a new Constitution making our Association more nimble and inclusive of our NCMs, retired and Reserve members. We are working to make sure that we are fully bilingual in all aspects of our operations. We also expanded our online footprint with a Facebook page in which we publicize our community’s latest news such as promotions, DWDs and other social events.
Our Association is our only medium to keep us all connected. I see its activities as critical to our Regimental family’s well-being and in maintaining our comradeship considering that most of us will never go back to a Regiment. It is ours to keep and it successes or failure rests solely with us.
In that light, I would ask you to consider attending as many events as you can manage, understanding that we all need to achieve a balance between our professional and personal lives.
Looking forward this fall, I would like to highlight three noteworthy events for your consideration:
• Our Fall Meet and Greet will be held at the Army Officers’ Mess on 15 Sep at 1300. The event is open to all ranks and will be attended by the Colonel Commandant and the Senior Serving Gunner, LGen Rouleau. It will feature a formal medals donation from the De Hart family to the RCA, medals which include one of only 6 Military Crosses awarded to Gunners during the Korean War;
• A St Barbara TGIF held at the Army Officer’s Mess on 29 Nov at 1200 for all ranks; and
• A St Barbara Special Guest Night on 30 Nov for which details will be shared via SEPCOR.

• La réception automnale du 15 sep au mess des officiers de l’Armée prévue à 1300. Cet événement est ouvert à tous. Le Colonel commandant ainsi que l’Artilleur principal en service, le LGén Rouleau, seront présents. Nous profiterons de l’occasion pour souligner un don de médailles de la famille De Hart à l’ARC. Ces médailles incluent une Croix Militaire, une de 6 qui ont été décernées à des artilleurs durant la guerre de Corée;
Thank you,
BGen Liam McGarry
